A 26-year-old Singaporean has been arrested in Bali after allegedly strangling his Indonesian girlfriend to death following an argument believed to have been triggered by suspicions of infidelity.

Police said the couple had been in a relationship for about a year and had argued repeatedly over the issue.

Investigators said the suspect strangled the 26-year-old woman for around 15 minutes inside their rented room in South Denpasar.

After realising she had died, he allegedly covered her body with a carpet and large stuffed toys before remaining in the room.

The victim's younger sibling later discovered the body after noticing a foul smell coming from the room.

Police said the suspect initially stayed silent before fleeing the scene, but he was tracked down and arrested around three hours after the case was reported.

Investigators gathered CCTV footage, witness statements and forensic evidence, which they said supported the murder allegation.

The suspect has been charged under Indonesia's murder laws and remains in police custody as investigations continue.
