Reform Party leader Kenneth Jeyaretnam dies at 67

Kenneth Jeyaretnam, secretary-general of the Reform Party and one of Singapore's longest-serving opposition figures, has died at the age of 67.

His wife, Amanda Jeyaretnam, announced that he died peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by his family, on Saturday, 18 July 2026.

Tributes poured in following news of his death.

Former lawyer Clarence Lun described Jeyaretnam as "thoughtful, courteous and scrupulous", saying his contribution to Singapore's public life should not be judged solely by whether he held political office. People's Alliance for Reform leader Lim Tean also paid tribute, describing him as a "steadfast voice in Singapore's opposition"

The son of veteran opposition politician J. B. Jeyaretnam, Kenneth took over the leadership of the Reform Party in 2009, months after his father's death.

Under his leadership, the party contested several General Elections. He led Reform Party teams in Ang Mo Kio GRC in 2011 and 2020, and West Coast GRC in 2015.

Although he never won a parliamentary seat, he remained one of Singapore's most recognisable opposition voices for more than a decade.

In recent years, Kenneth remained active in public discourse through social media, frequently commenting on politics, governance and economic issues.
