A couple known for documenting high-risk rooftop climbs has been arrested after scaling the antenna of New York City's Empire State Building, where a marriage proposal took place more than 440 metres above the ground.
Russian urban climbers Angela Nikolau, 33, and Ivan "Vanya" Beerkus, 32, climbed the building's 443-metre spire on 1 July before unfurling a banner reading, "When the power of love beats the love of power, the world knows peace."
Beerkus later proposed on one knee, and Nikolau shared photos of her engagement ring on social media.
The pair were arrested after descending and face charges including burglary, criminal trespass and reckless endangerment.
Authorities said no one was injured and have not revealed how the couple accessed the restricted area.
Nikolau and Beerkus gained international attention through the 2024 Netflix documentary Skywalkers: A Love Story, which follows their relationship and rooftop climbs around the world.
